I place the pink bunny back inside the cardboard shipping box, along with the toiletries, slide the box underneath the lounge chair, and make a quick exit.

Chapter Six

Olivia

It’s annoying getting a wake-up call after an evening of margaritas, dancing, kissing the hot maintenance man, and then staying up all night, returning work phone calls overseas.

But, I enjoyed the sound of Mack’s voice on the phone. Rolling over to my back, I stretch my arms and legs out into an extended spread eagle position, stretching my muscles. If only Mack were up here in bed with me right now. I wouldn’t mind waking up next to his naked–

Oh no.

Oh no no no.

I sit bolt upright in bed, remembering what I bought online. Oh no. What if he sees it? Mortifying.

Flying out of bed, I grab the first bathing suit I find and run into the bathroom, dropping my pajamas along the floor. I can’t get dressed or gather my electronics fast enough. Laptop, phone, headphones, wallet. Oh, my god. I tear through the hotel room and race down the back stairs as fast as I can. Please, please, tell me he hasn’t opened the box yet.

At the back door, I have to stop, and say friendly greetings to a family with a dozen little kids and bags of beach toys while I wait for them to get out of the way.

Finally, I get outside, and it’s too late. The tent is up.

Walking tentatively to the tent, I peer around and look inside. It’s empty, but it’s mine. It even has the pretty rainbow beach towel I picked out.

Setting my gear down, I notice a box under the chair, and inside is everything else.

Flopping down in the chair, I pull my phone out and video call my best friend Judi. The only person in the world who will understand my horror.

“Hey Livi, we were just making cookies and wishing you were here. How’s Florida.”

“Hey Livi!” my other best childhood friend, Marina, waves to me from behind Judi.

“Hi Marina! Florida is awful. You’ll never guess what I did.”

Judi and Marina laugh so hard when I tell them about Mack and him seeing my purchase, that they’re gasping for air between giggles, and pretty soon I am giggling along with them.

“I can’t believe you, Olivia. That’s the greatest story ever. Only you would do that.”

“Really, only me?”

“Yeah, you’re right, I might have done it too. But I’d be proud of that toy and ask him to help me use it.”

“You would not!”

“I so would. And truthfully, I might have kissed him in high school.”

“No way.”

“Way. I’m pretty sure that I kissed both of Mads brothers at one of their pool parties. The oldest one was a bit of a nerd, but both had rockin’ bodies. Well, hey, I need to check on the oven before the cookies burn. Send me a picture when you can. And damn it, hit that, would you!?”

“Merry Christmas Judi. Marina.”

“Merry Christmas Livi!”

Slinking back into my chair, I realize I’m not wearing a matching bikini.
